America has a dismal record when it comes to voting. It also has turned into an Oligarchy, in which the politicians are bought and sold by rich motherf***ers (since there aren’t enough votes to get their attention). This is not a coincidence. When most Americans don’t vote, we get liars, crooks and con artists “elected” via bribes and propaganda to be our “public servants”.

So mandatory voting would at least get more of our citizens to show up and vote (maybe charge them a fee on their taxes if they don’t). And that in and of itself would be a benefit, even if the new voters just vote randomly: it would scare the crap out of our “representatives” and the 1%-ers who own them. But to get maximum benefit, it would be better if people understood just what and who the Hell they are voting for, and (most importantly) why they should question everything a candidate or government says.

One example: a popular bit of Plato, currently winging its way about the Intertubez:

“One of the penalties for refusing to participate in politics is that you end up being governed by your inferiors.”

This is not the exact wording (he wrote, “But the chief penalty [of good men who refuse to lead] is to be governed by someone worse if a man will not himself hold office and rule.” [Republic, Book I, line 347c]) but it captures the essence.

In other words: we wind up with crooks, fools, and a**holes in government when the competent, intelligent and decent people refuse to run and/or vote.

Another couple of examples:

In religion and politics people’s beliefs and convictions are in almost every case gotten at second-hand, and without examination, from authorities who have not themselves examined the questions at issue but have taken them at second-hand from other non-examiners, whose opinions about them were not worth a brass farthing. – Autobiography of Mark Twain.

Sounds a lot like the crap we hear from Teabaggers and such, does it not? Willful ignorance, regarded as a virtue rather than a vice. Here’s one example: James Inhofe http://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/inhofe-an-epa-foe-likely-to-lead-senate-environment-committee/2014/11/05/d0b4221e-64f4-11e4-836c-83bc4f26eb67_story.html
And:

“To lodge all power in one party and keep it there is to insure bad government and the sure and gradual deterioration of the public morals.” – Mark Twain’s Autobiography

This writer would prefer that it say “a party” rather than “one party”, but that’s just me.

That is wisdom, Gentle Reader, spanning thousands of years, and speaking a truth we most sorely need to hear: if you let parties and plutocrats run things, they’ll run things to suit themselves. Which they have done. Those of us who do not participate in politics will NOT get the government we want: we’ll get the government THEY want.

Everybody needs education. Everybody needs motivation. This modest, if cynical, proposal can help empower our people and repair our democracy, at a very low cost. It’s kind of hard to think of anybody who’d object to that, right? Ermmmm….well…the bastards who have stolen our country will most certainly object. But f*** those people.

Here is the link to the American Insurgent Movement Facebook page. Here is one part of their “manifesto”, again openly displayed on Facebook at the time of this blog’s posting:

Description
AIM is a Pre-Constitutionalist Community that offers those who seek True Patriotism and are looking for absolute Freedom by doing the Will of God. Who want to restore America Pre-Constitutionally and look forward to stopping the Regime with action by bloodshed. To remove those by force whom don’t agree with the Restoration of the Republic…

Note that the terror group’s website (http://www.americaninsurgentmovement.com) has been pulled down, after the FBI found out about their leader’s plans for a bloodbath and caught him in the act. But his Facebook page is still up.

Facebook takes quick action to censor pages that advocate for LGBT rights, along with assorted liberal groups. Post a pic of two dudes kissing, and it’s likely to get your account yanked and the page disappeared, but advocating the violent overthrow of the US Government? No problem, says Facebook. Sedition, mass murder, treason, these are evidently cherished values at the House that Zuckerberg Built. But no pictures of icky gay kisses.

If you want a snapshot of just how f***ed we are as a society, look no further than Facebook’s tolerance of murder, and Facebook’s censorship of love.

Here is one example: http://www.katu.com/news/local/Police-Man-with-gun-outside-Hillsboro-middle-school-no-threat-224502991.html?tab=video&c=y&mobile=y An unidentified man carrying long guns and handguns around school buildings in Oregon. He isn’t breaking any laws, so the cops can’t even ask him his name. But he is scaring the crap out of kids and grownups alike, because this looks a lot like Newtown, Columbine, etc.

Then there’s former police chief Mark Kessler: http://www.cnn.com/2013/09/20/us/pennsylvania-police-chief-fired/index.html who posted videos of him killing national leaders in effigy, and later assembled an armed mob to terrorize the town and its council when they objected to his actions. Said actions being technically legal, but obviously having a coercive and violent intent.

Thirdly, we have the lunatic who carried an AR-15 into a crowded store: http://www.policymic.com/mobile/articles/23647/joseph-kelley-displays-ar-15-rifle-at-jc-penney-is-this-appropriate. Said action, while technically legal, terrorized the rest of the shoppers and drove many of them from the store.

“If it was legal, what’s the problem?”, some of you might be saying. Two examples of legal-but-ominous actions that later turned out to have devastating results later because they weren’t delay with early on:
Number A: Hitler’s National Socialist party;
Letter 2: The 9/11 hijackers’ flight school attendance and strange behavior while there.

Think about it. As the saying goes, everyone’s a law-abiding citizen…until they cross the line by committing crimes and/or terrorist attacks.

Or at least, that’s what Virginia’s “Republican” AG-in-waiting thinks. He feels so strongly about it, in fact, that he wrote a law in 2009 that would imprison women who had miscarriages if they did not call the cops to report the event, and save the miscarried fetus to hand over as evidence.

This is the man that Virginia Repubs think should be their next Attorney General, so it’s pretty clear that they like his ideas about what should be legal or illegal. And he believes that women who endure the tragedy and trauma of losing a child-to-be should be assumed guilty of criminal acts until proven otherwise. So, the rest of the Republican Party of that state (and maybe the entire country) thinks women who miscarry are de facto criminals.

Don’t take the Cranky Word for it: it’s right there in Section E:
When a fetal death occurs without medical attendance upon the mother at or after the delivery or abortion, the mother or someone acting on her behalf shall, within 24 hours, report the fetal death, location of the remains, and identity of the mother to the local or state police or sheriff’s department of the city or county where the fetal death occurred. No one shall remove, destroy, or otherwise dispose of any remains without the express authorization of law-enforcement officials or the medical examiner. Any person violating the provisions of this subsection shall be guilty of a Class 1 misdemeanor.” Please note that Virginia already has similar laws on the books.

Class 1 offenses can get you up to a year in prison. A year in prison for someone who did nothing wrong. For a woman who loses a baby. For a heartbroken woman. Yes, that’s what today’s “Republicans” think.

This writer knows families that have lost babies, including his own: indeed, he came within a few months of having a brother named “Chris”, so he gets it. A pity that our Elephantine legislators don’t. Miscarriages are human tragedies, not crimes.

Regardless of one’s political philosophy, how could anyone be so cruel, so callous, so despicable as to summarily imprison grieving mothers who either failed to called the police immediately after suffering a miscarriage, or didn’t keep the remains of the poor lost child in their possession to hand over to the police? How could anyone hate women that much?

And how can anyone (including you) vote for a party that supports such legislation?
