The Blunt and Crankies are on our way home from a vacation with wonderful friends in warm, sunny places. As we stopped for the night in Whereverthehell Kentucky, she wrapped a scarf around her head because, well, it’s f***ing cold outside. Looked a bit like a hijab, but who cares when you’ve come from the Florida coast to Freezerville in 36 hours, right?

Wrong. The woman who was misguided enough to marry your humble correspondent is of Irish/Shawnee/Syrian descent, and is frequently taken as a local in whatever country or region in which we are at a given moment. Be it in Central America, Scotland, on a Reservation or so on, people associate her with their ethnic preconceptions. So, when the locals saw her with the scarf wrapped tightly around her head, they projected their image of a Middle Eastern woman upon her. Disturbingly.

Women looked at her with a condescending mixture of pity and disdain. They looked at me as if I were a wife-abusing terrorist. Men looked at us like we were both worthy of being shot by Chris f***ing Kyle.

All because a white woman was chilly and covered her head.

America, you are SO f***ing f***ed. Surprised nobody shot us based on their idiotic, bigoted, stupid-assed ideas.

Je suis Chapel Hill.

Mr. Blunt and Cranky

Yes, as soon as Douche Duke announced that a loudspeaker would be used to anounce an upcoming Muslim church service, Billy Graham’s son went ballistic. Evidently, the loudspeaker in question would unleash some serious kinda Armageddon were anyone but Fundagelical “Christians” to utter a call to prayer via its Holy Electromagnetic Mechanism:

DURHAM, N.C. (AP) — Days after announcing that a Muslim call to prayer would echo from its historic chapel tower, Duke University changed course Thursday following a flurry of calls and emails objecting to the plan.

The original plan drew the ire of evangelist Franklin Graham, who urged Duke alumni to withhold support because of violence against Christians that he attributed to Muslims. Schoenfeld said emails and calls came from alumni and others in the community.

“As Christianity is being excluded from the public square and followers of Islam are raping, butchering, and beheading Christians, Jews, and anyone who doesn’t submit to their Sharia Islamic law, Duke is promoting this in the name of religious pluralism,” said a post on Graham’s Facebook page.

This writer fails to see how sending a few words over a wire, through a magnet and out via a paper cone could somehow result in rape, decapition, and general brouhaha. Apparently, the Douche Duke speaker in question is somehow imbued with magical, sanctified, religious powers that must be used only for Jesus-centric announcements. If one were to misuse the Holy Douche Duke Loudspeaker, Jihad would evidently be unleashed on campus.

Mind, when Douche Duke U already has a student porn star, academic misconduct, alleged rapes, and other edgy activities going on, so maybe they can’t be too careful about allowing any more sinful activity to somehow violate the Holy Loudspeaker. (They should also maybe consider changing the name of the Fuqua Business School to something less open to double-entendre. Just sayin’.)

Really, Duke? No, seriously, really? Only a total Douche would act like you are acting.

Mr. Blunt and Cranky

You probably did not hear about the arrest of anti-government terrorist C. L. Bundy. It hasn’t gotten much media attention, even though fellow members of the same terrorist cell have assassinated police officers. Indeed, it was barely a blip on the local news:

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Authorities say the son of Nevada rancher Cliven Bundy has been arrested on federal land on parole violations and a drug court arrest warrant.

Records showed 35-year-old Cliven Lance Bundy was held Wednesday at the Clark County jail pending a court appearance.

And it’s not the first time he’s been arrested: he was jailed last summer and let go. Yes, that’s right. A member of a violent, armed terrorist family organization was caught and released, as if he were some sort of little flopping fish instead of a dangerous criminal. What the f***, no, really, what the f***? Why does this guy get a pass, when people from the Middle East rot in Gitmo for years on end even if they’re innocent?

The only possible answer is: he’s a white, “conservative” teabagger. Bundy’s family and otehr members of their cell have killed, assaulted, stolen, threatened, and trampled all over the Constitution, cops and civilians, and have they been waterboarded? Tortured? Sent offshore to be “interrogated”? Not a bit of it. No, the government treats them with kid gloves, no matter what they steal or who they murder.

Charlie Hebdo’s attackers are the targets of an international police and military operation; the Bundy terrorists are left to continue their crime spree in comfort, hardly inconvenienced at all. That’s what skin color and not being a Moslem means these days: those two characteristics constitute a license to terrorize.

Mr. Blunt and Cranky

(P.S. Yes, the Bundys say he’s not part of their treasonous, seditious, terrorist operations. But they said the same thing about the two murderous swine who offed those Las Vegas cops last year, too. You want to trust the word of a man who is stealing from you and trying to overthrow your government? This writer wouldn’t trust them as far as he could throw them.)

Really, could it be anyone else? Ever since Monday’s bombing, the Clueless News Network  has been full of fertilizer. Time after time, they have leapt to conclusions, jumped at shadows, and made mountains out of molehills. These activities might make a good workout regimen, but they make horrible news.

Mr. Blunt and Cranky swore off CNN after Candy and Poppy did their “Sympathy for the Rapist” bit. But alas, he was stuck in a room on Tuesday morning, and that room had CNN on, and he could not get at the remote. So he was obliged to watch those “journalists” alternating between wild speculation and self-aggrandizing for over an hour. And that’s pretty much how they spent the rest of the week: slandering innocents, demonizing “dark-skinned” people and Moslems, and half-heartedly walking back their many misstatements.

Even Congress, we would venture to say, hasn’t told as many whoppers this week as the Clueless News Network. And so they have truly earned their Crown O’ Polished Turds.

Mr. Blunt and Cranky

Paul Ryan is one of the most seriously deranged and dangerous individuals in contemporary government, and the very idea of his being one dressage accident away from the Presidency fills Mr. Blunt and Cranky with dread. Ryan’s personal ideology is hugely wacked-out, but hidden behind an earnest  exterior and Eddie Munster hairdo, so most Americans are not aware of just how great a threat he poses to us as citizens, and to the future of our nation as a whole.

“Conservative” Catholics (and like-minded Christians of other varieties) tend to cherry-pick biblical verses that align with their prejudices and make life easier for themselves: take one part Jesus, two parts Paul, add a dash of Leviticus, mix vigorously and voila! Custom-made theological comfort food.  That is, b y the way, a pretty fair representation of the formula used by the Conference of Catholic Bishops, Southern Baptists and others who oppose choice, and support the destruction of the safety net and the abolition  of the separation of Church and State. By trolling the Bible and selecting which bits and bobs suit their existing natures, they can come up with a way to call themselves Christians without having to work too hard at all that difficult loving, non-judging, forgiving stuff.

Paul Ryan adds a scary new dimension to this paradigm. To the selflessness of Jesus, and the sternness of Paul and the Old Testament, he adds the selfishness and Atheism of Ayn Rand. This allows him to think himself a Christian while allowing the poor to starve, women to be abused, minorities oppressed and so on. He can apply Atheistic Darwinian Ayn Rand thinking to anyone he doesn’t like or want to deal with, and the Christian bits to those that he does like. If you think about it, this is a very succinct and cogent analysis of Paul Ryan and his growing legion of adherents. It also explains how someone who claims to be a Catholic can take the seemingly heartless and anti-Christian (indeed, sometimes inhumane) positions that Ryan espouses.

Yes, we know, he claims to embrace Ayn Rand’s egocentric and socially Darwinian philosophy while rejecting her Atheism. Unfortunately, it is impossible to do this. Don’t believe it? Read her books. Then read the Gospels. They are fundamentally incompatible. What Ryan is doing is intellectually, morally, spiritually and constitutionally inconsistent, and the fact that he is able to think in such a manner indicates that he has some pretty serious mental competency issues.

The reason this is dangerous? Americans come with values and belief systems aplenty, but you would be hard-pressed to find, say, a Hasidic pagan. Or a Moslem running a pork barbecue. Such self-contradictory attitudes are clearly ridiculous, and would be laugh-lines in a comedy sketch at best; but never a seriously considered moral code.   Ryan’s contradiction goes beyond even those crazy examples: he simultaneously acts on a belief in God and the absence of God, and further seems quite comfortable with that. The man is a lunatic, plain and simple: too, Ryan intends to impose his insane “moral” views upon the rest of us, whether we like it or not.

Abortion? He picks Paul over Ayn. Feeding the poor? He picks Ayn over Jesus. The Constitutional guarantees of equality? Ayn over the Bible and the law of the land. And so on. Whatever is easier, more comfortable, or enhances his wealth or that of his family and friends, that is what he considers moral at any given time.

No one, be they Atheist or religious, can count on Paul Ryan. He will flip-flop and switch sides as it suits him and his paymasters. Whatever he wants to do at any moment, he can find a source within one of his contradictory value sources to justify his greedy, egotistical, self-centered mood du jour. Beyond one single constant (“What’s good for Paul is good for the nation”), he cannot be predicted, and thus he cannot be trusted.

An Atheistic Christian for President? If you are not scared s***less by that prospect, you are not paying attention.
